Understanding GST in India
GST is a unified indirect tax that replaced multiple central and state taxes in India in July 2017. It applies to the supply of goods and services, with different rates for different categories:
- 5%: Essential items (food, basic healthcare)
- 12%: Standard goods (processed food, business class travel)
- 18%: Most services and goods (electronics, restaurants)
- 28%: Luxury goods and demerit goods (automobiles, tobacco)
GST Formulas
Remove GST: Original Price = Inclusive Price / (1 + GST Rate / 100)
CGST, SGST, and IGST
GST is split into components based on transaction type:
- CGST: Central GST — goes to the central government (50% of total GST)
- SGST: State GST — goes to the state government (50% of total GST)
- IGST: Integrated GST — for inter-state transactions (full GST rate)
Frequently Asked Questions
Exclusive GST means GST is added on top of the base price. Inclusive GST means the price already includes GST. Use "Add GST" for exclusive pricing and "Remove GST" for inclusive pricing.
Enter ₹1000 in the amount field, select 18% GST rate, and choose "Add GST". The GST amount will be ₹180 and total will be ₹1180. CGST = ₹90, SGST = ₹90.
Select "Remove GST" and enter the inclusive price. For example, if a product costs ₹1180 including 18% GST: Original price = 1180 / 1.18 = ₹1000, GST = ₹180.
Most IT and software services in India attract an 18% GST rate. This applies to software development, consulting, cloud services, and similar digital services.
